Not much has been learned about the early life of Amos Atchley. He was born in eastern TN, probably Sevier County. His parents were almost certainly Daniel Atchley and Mary Russel. Mary Russel was the daughter of Daniel Russel and Jemimah _______.

According to an autobiographical sketch by Robert C Atchley (b1839), a son of Seth Atchley, "...My father was born and raised in Sevier County, TN, and his father was born and raised in New Jersey. My natural Grandmother was born and raised in S Carolina. Her maiden name was Mary Russell." This would indicate that Seth and Amos Atchley were both born in Sevier County, and that their father Daniel was born in NJ sometime prior to 1790. Additionally, information from an abstract of wills for Jefferson Co, TN indicates that Daniel Russell (father of Amos's mother, Mary) died Sept 14, 1805, mentioning his daughter "Mary Atchley".

Amos Atchley married Angelina Trotter 1831. Tax records for TN indicate they lived on a 185 acre farm in McMinn County (1832). They either moved, or the counties were realigned, because in 1840 the census shows them living in Bradley County. Six of Amos' eight children were born in TN. In 1847, Amos moved his family to Ark where they settled near what is now Crossroads, seven miles south of Sheridan, in Grant county. It is probable that Amos bought land from his brother Seth, who had moved to Ark. some ten years earlier. Census records also indicate a William Atchley, born 1820, in TN, also lived in what is now Grant County. According to information on the fly-leaf of a book belonging to Robert C Atchley, son of Seth, William Atchley was born Dec 20 1820 (re: Florence Powell). This is more than likely the younger brother of Amos and Seth, but may be a cousin who followed them from TN.
