"Copy of letter from King David Holloway to daughter, Dorothy Holloway 1/18/34

Got your letter Saturday. Glad you are well. We are both well. Sure are having some fine days now. Your Aunt May’s folks are well. David went home with Sullivan Sat. to help them burn plant beds this week. Don’t you know they will tear things up. Sure are having a
nice time for it. Had a letter from Nell Saturday. They were all well. Everything is going just about the same. The second Baptist Church called Bro. Lane for pastor this year and he is doing
some mighty good preaching. I got my letter and went in with them last week. (Princeton)
I will send you what I know about our folks. Your grandfather Satterfield’s folk come from Scotland and the George’s from Ireland and the Holloway’s from Ireland. Just don’t know just where the Bingham’s came from. All I know and can find out is they came from Ohio here, but I think they came from Iowa to Ohio. Asked your Aunt May about it and she did not know for sure. Your Uncle Jabe stayed all night with us Saturday night and he did not know for sure. Your Grandfather George was named Billy. He had two brothers that went to California. Their names were Andy and Allen. Your Grandfather George had three girls and two boys. Their names were Andy and Jimmie and Fannie and Jane and Elzie. This was your grandmother’s name (Elzie). She had three boys and four girls; Willie, Lee and Frank; Mollie, Maggie, and May and one that died in its infancy. I don’t know for sure but think it was a girl.
My grandfather Holloway’s name was Robert and Grandmother, Catherine. They had six boys and 4 girls; Helen, Mattie, and Addie and Lizzie. I think I remember they called her Sis. The boys were George Washington, Joseph Critenten, Charlie Morehead, J.H., R.C., and William. Don’t know just what their middle names were but we called them Uncle Bob and Jim and Will. There were ten of us: Finis, Silas, America, Charles Morehead, Joe, Nettie, Jabe, Bobbie Catherine, King David and Oscar Tennison. Of course Bobbie’s name should come before Jabe or J.W. I don’t know what all of their double names are. Your grandfather Satterfield’s name was John Abram.
I don’t know what my grand father and grand mother Bingham’s names were, but will find out from Bobbie and let you know. Jabe W., Rile and John, Rettie and Irene, but will find out from Bobbie and let you know. There was a Nire Kellie that went to Oregan way back in covered wagon days and drove cows, but think she was my mother’s Aunt. Also there was a Silas Bingham down in Union County at Morganfield, I think he was your grandmother’s nephew. Don’t know what his father’s name was. He used to come to our house. Just can recollect him. I will try to find out something more of him as Mr. Willett was acquainted with them and said they were mighty wealthy, so that looks good. Ha! Ha! Write soon. Take care of yourself.

P.S. Your grandmother Satterfield was raised down at White Sulpher just six miles from here. I went with Sullivan last spring down to Crider to look at a mule and we passed right by the old
George place, or through it, as it lays on both sides of the road. Did not see the old houses as they have been torn away and new ones built. There is a Charley George lives close to us. He is your mother’s cousin. See him most every day.".

2Holloway, King David; Letter from Bobbie Catherine Holloway Martin.
"King,
Aunt Nira Kelly was mama’s oldest sister and mama and Aunt Ret Jefferson was two youngest of 12 children. Aunt Ret was youngest and mama next and Cousin Silas Bingham was her nephew, son of her oldest brother, our own cousin, would be Dorothy’s second cousin but I can’t remember what grandma Bingham’s given name was. She died at our house. Lived there when I was a baby, but her maiden name before she was married was Cranston. She had a nephew that was Bishop in the Methodist Conference. I can remember seeing his picture. I guess maybe Cousin Ret remembers what Grandma’s given name was. She was buried at Wallonia on the place Jim Nichols owns. I have often thought I would love to go see if there was any tombs to her grave. They came to Wallonia to Uncle Jabe Bingham’s when Mama was only 13 years old and made their home there until Mama was married, and then (grandma) lived with us. Aunt Nira Kelly married a Methodist preacher and when the Methodist church split up and had it North and South Methodist they left Ohio and went to Portland, Oregon, and they both died there. I guess there is some of their family there now. Aunt Nira lived to be 99 years old. I have her picture, and they had another sister, Aunt Hannah Howe. I don’t know how long she lived, but I think there were several of the children died when they were small.
I think May must be mistaken about grandpa Holloway. They always told me they were raised up above Hopkinsville. I can remember of some of his people coming to see us; a whole wagon load, and it seems to me they stayed a week, but I don’t remember the name. I think it was his sister’s family, and one of his brothers went off and married an Indian squaw, and some of his brothers are buried at Hopewell. Uncle Dick, Uncle Pleas and I don’t remember Cousin Jim Holloway’s father’s name. They were all buried at Hopewell. Uncle Dick never was married. Uncle Pleas lived on the place Jas. Gray lives on now. He was Cousin Fannie Rich’s father and I think he married a Kilgore; some kin to Uncle John George Kilgore. That is all I know about them.
Bobbie.".

3Holloway, King David: Excerpts of two letters from King to Christine Holloway Bathacre.
"Excerpts of two letters Uncle King wrote Christine Holloway Bathacre:

Speaking about can’t find out about the Holloway’s farther back than your Great grandpa that is as far back as I can go. The Holloways came from North Carolina but don’t know whether Grandfather was born there or after they came to Kentucky. He had two brothers. I only know one of their names. His name was Pleas. I know where he lived and died at a big Spring goes by the place Holloway Springs till this day. I can’t say the Edmond Holloway was my Great Grandfather. My father was born in Caldwell County near the Need Gray place that’s as far back as I can go. There were 4 Jim Holloways.

1. Sour Jim my 2 Fathers Bro. I know you know him. Aunt Bells husband.
2. Negro Jim - He was dark complected.
3. Squirrel Jim
4. Gallon Jim - sold whiskey, dry goods, groceries, and hardware in Old Eddyville,
Kentucky, when I was a boy so this is all I can say about the Holloways.

The varmint trace road was old stage coach route long before the railroad was thought of. It started at Smithland or Dycusburg came thru Princeton 2 miles north of Dulaney on the left side of the Illinois Central and went to Hopkinsville probably farther. It got its name from the fact there were all kinds of varmints. Wolves, wildcats, rattle snakes and bears, all kinds of varmints. The driver carried guns to protect the horses from the varmints. There was a man in Eddyville when I first recollect carried the mail from the depot named Robinson that drove stages over that route also had drove stages from Smithland between the rivers by the way of Golden Pond (known for its whiskey) and Dover to Nashville, Tennessee. I used to talk to him thats where I got this.

Some more from Uncle King’s second letter.

Finas was clerk in the store at the Hillman Rolling Mill when he took sick. It was Dan Hillman ran Works Grocery and Company Store on the opposite side of the river from Empire and Center Furnaces. One mile below Dan Hillman had Empire Center and Fulton Furnaces all on the same side of the river. Trigg furnace 4 miles from Rockcastle on the Cadiz road and the Rolling Mill with all in blast at one time. He had close to 200,000 acres of land on both sides of the river. I just can recollect Finas, they brought him home in a covered wagon and he died that night.

Silas lives just below my fathers place 4 miles. He died soon after Finas, I don’t know how long, I just recollect him when he died. Both of them and Joe are buried at the Grandfathers place, my father and mother and Grandfather and Grandmother are all buried there. Meck and Bobbie are buried at the Eddy Creek Church close to Hawkins Place. (Edmund Hawkins was the first person buried there). If you could drive up the Grand Rivers some pretty warm spring day get Nellie Holloway Hones and go get Emogene Holloway Huffman to take you to all these places. Jabe is buried at Saratoga Church. Tennie at Friendship. Your Grandmother

Holloway died in May 1904 and your Grandpa Holloway died February 1, 1905.

Grandfather was from North Carolina, I don’t know whether he was born there or not. He came here when a boy or young man from North Carolina. He married a Boyd and raised 12 children, six boys and six girls: George, Crit, William, Charley, James, Robert, Lizzie, Laura, Addie, Catherine (Cappy) Helenia, and Mattie.

George married Irene Bingham. Crit married Hellen Boyd. Will married Edith Bush Satterfield, Charley married a Mitchum. Robert an Allison, Lizzie a Cash, Laura a Kevil, Addie a Cobb. Salina a Nichols, Helen a Robertson, Mattie to Johnson.

Your Grandmother Holloway was a Bingham don’t know her fathers or mothers name. She was born in Athens, Ohio. Her father died there and buried there when she was 11 or 12. Three of her brothers lived in Kentucky, they came to bring Rettie Jefferson down there. Grandma Bingham died at my mothers (Irene Holloway Bingham) and fathers home long before I was born. She was buried in a family grave yard near Wallonia. They had one sister Nira married a Kellie and went to Portland, Oregon in a covered wagon. Oxen pulled the wagon 10 or 15 families with 15 or 20 ox wagons called trains at that time. The place my mothers (Mary Irene B.) was born is 75 or 100 miles from here and my grandfather was buried there. There were four Bingham boys. Silas lived near Morganfield, Jabe lived and died at Wallonia, John and Kiles both died at Old Kuttawa. Uncle John married twice. Two Preemans.
