The 1900 census shows Clara's birth year as 1852.
There is an entry for College Hill Cemetery in Bowie County Texas that shows a death date of 26 May 1918 for Clara.
Harlston Atchley (Harl) was born in Crossroads, Arkansas, just south of Sheridan. Chances are good that he was named after a Harlston R Withers, who came to Grant Co., Ark as a Methodist "boy preacher" in 1851 and started the New Hope Methodist Church at the home of Seth Atchley. (re: Robert C Atchley's autobiographical sketch). Harlston was the youngest child of Amos Atchley and Angelina Trotter. When his father died in 1859, Harlston's oldest brother, Daniel, took over as head of the family. The 1860 census indicates that all the children except Clayborn remained on the family farm. Clayborn, age 25, evidently hired out as a farm hand to his uncle Seth Atchley, and moved in with that family. (see 1860 census, Grant Co., Ark)
The land which Amos Atchley left to his children was valued at $480 in 1860, just prior to the Civil War. Sometime prior to 1870, Harlston's brother Seth married a Melissa Jackson, and moved onto his own farm in Derasaw, just down the road. Harlston lived for a time with his brother Seth while attending school. It was probably in Derasaw that Harlston met Clara Alice Gentry, daughter of Calvin M Gentry, a large landowner, schoolteacher, and Minister.
Harlston and "Alice" Gentry were married October 5, 1879 by Rev J C Greenwood (Grant co Marriage book A, page 150), and lived on their own farm near Calvert township in Grant Co. Living on adjacent farms were Harlston's brother, Standifer Atchley (wife-Sarah), and Henry C Atchley, Harlston's first cousin (son of Seth Atchley). Alice's brother, William Gentry lived with them in 1880 (See census records). sometime after 1900, Harlston moved his family to Texas, where they settled in Hubbard (near Dekalb), Bowie County.
The birthdates for the children of Harlston and Clara Gentry Atchley have come mainly from a handwritten note given to Jimmy Atchley by Clara Atchley Hamilton (sister of Irvin).
